In recent months, the state of Iowa has passed a series of anti-transgender laws that have sent shockwaves throughout the LGBTQ+ community.

These laws, which limit the rights of transgender and non-binary individuals, have drawn criticism from civil rights organizations and activists alike. In this blog post, we explore the impact of these laws on the trans community in Iowa, highlight the work being done by the Iowa Trans Mutual Aid organization, and share information about other resources available to Iowa transgender and non-conforming individuals.

The Iowa anti-transgender laws are a series of legislative initiatives aimed at limiting the rights of transgender and non-binary individuals. The laws were passed in response to a ruling by the Iowa Supreme Court in 2019, which declared that transgender individuals were protected under Iowa's Civil Rights Act. Since then, lawmakers have sought to roll back these protections, passing laws that prohibit transgender individuals from using public restrooms that match their gender identity and banning gender-affirming medical care for minors.

These laws have had a devastating impact on the trans community in Iowa.

Transgender and non-binary individuals are at a heightened risk of violence and discrimination, and these laws only serve to further marginalize an already vulnerable population. Moreover, the laws represent a significant step backward in the fight for LGBTQ+ rights, and have drawn criticism from civil rights organizations and activists nationwide.

In response to these laws, the Iowa Trans Mutual Aid organization was formed. This grassroots organization seeks to provide support and resources to Iowa transgender and non-binary individuals struggling to navigate the current political climate. Their efforts include providing emergency financial assistance, connecting trans individuals with mental health resources, and working to combat anti-trans legislation through advocacy and education.

Many small businesses and organizations are hosting fundraisers to support the Iowa Trans Mutual Aid’s efforts. Domestica is joining this effort by donating 50% of profits of sales from our Iowa Trans Mutual Aid Fundraiser. Through April 2, 2023 “give when you get” through purchases of a selection of Domestica’s modern handmade gifts, cards jewelry and home decor items. All fundraiser proceeds go directly to the organization, providing much-needed resources, travel expenses and other support to trans and non-conforming individuals in Iowa.
